Parmalat Cheese Factory and Shop

The Parmalat trade mark - the innovative splashing milk drop - identifies one of the leading Italian food companies and the world leader in milk processing. In 1961 an innovative young entrepreneur founded a company that was going to change the way the world saw milk. Mr. Calisto Tanzi named his company after Parma in Italy (which is also referred to as 'the food valley') and added an abbreviation for 'latte' (the Italian for milk). Parmalat began with the development of the world's first shelf-stable milk using the Swedish innovation of Ultra Heat Treatment (UHT) which enables the production of milk that has a longer shelflife and that does not need to be stored in a refrigerator.
Parmalat's 'Milk Box' became an instant success and soon achieved a prominent place on store shelves around the world. From this radical beginning, we have grown to be one of the world's leading international food companies with a host of quality products and annual sales exceeding $6 billion worldwide. Parmalat operates in 33 countries on six continents employing some 40 000 people.

Our core objectives and values to support our vision are:

FACTORY (back to top)
Parmalat's Bonnievale plant is the largest single cheese factory in southern Africa and renowned for various firsts in the country, such as:
  • the first production facility outside South East Asia to receive the coveted Twenty Keys Bronze Award for its world class efficiency
  • the first cheese plant to be awarded HACCP for its systems focused on safe food production
  • the first to be ISO 9002 listed; and
  • the first dairy production facility to comply to all requirements to produce cheese for exports to EU countries
Apart from the above, Bonnievale's cheese makers can boast with numerous Cheese Manufacturer of the Year Awards.
In 2001 Parmalat also received the first ever Dairy Product of the Year Award for its white cheddar Bon Blanc. This champion cheese is being produced at Bonnievale and available at Parmalat's cheese shop.
It is interesting to know that Parmalat uses 10 liters of milk to produce 1kg of cheese - whether it's cheddar, gouda or quality mozzarella.
The top quality milk produced in the dairy-friendly coastal regions of our country by committed dairy producers, ensures continuous top quality dairy products.
